How to Tell If Your USDT Is ERC20 or TRC20

How to Identify Whether Your USDT Is ERC20 or TRC20

Sending USDT to the wrong network is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes in crypto. Understanding how to identify your USDT network before transferring can prevent permanent fund loss.

Check the Wallet Address Format

The easiest way to identify the network: ERC20 addresses start with "0x" (example: 0xbd7e...). TRC20 addresses start with "T" (example: T9zP14...). If you see a deposit address beginning with T, use TRC20. If it begins with 0x, use ERC20.

Check Your Exchange Interface

All major exchanges clearly label USDT networks during deposits and withdrawals. Look for dropdown menus or network selectors showing "USDT-TRC20," "USDT-ERC20," or similar labels. Never assume — always verify the network is correct before submitting.

Check Your Wallet App

Most modern wallets display the network alongside the token balance. If your wallet shows "USDT (TRC20)" or "USDT on Tron," your USDT is on the TRC20 network. Wallets like Trust Wallet support both networks but keep them as separate tokens.

What Happens If You Send to the Wrong Network

Sending TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 address (or vice versa) typically results in lost funds. The transaction completes on the sending network, but the receiving address does not exist on that chain. Recovery is sometimes possible if both networks use the same private key, but requires technical expertise.

Prevention Best Practices

Always copy-paste wallet addresses rather than typing manually. Verify the first and last 4 characters of the address after pasting. Do a test transfer of a small amount before sending large sums. Confirm the network selection on both the sending and receiving platforms matches.
